HPV infection in male partners of infertile couples seems to not affect seminal parameters
2012
[P-057] HPV infection in male partners of infertile couples seems to not affect seminal parameters A.M. Brucculeri1, G. Ruvolo1, L. Giovannelli2, R. Schillaci3, E. Cittadini1, G. Scaravelli4, A. This small DNA viruses induce epithelial cell prolifera…
Cellular therapies for the endometrium: An update
2018
An update on the current state of endometrial cell therapies in terms of cell types, mechanisms of action, delivery, safety, regulatory frameworks and future perspectives. This review focuses on clinical trials using angiogenesis-promoting therapies and stromal therapies piloted in the last 10 years for alleviating Asherman's syndrome and long-term infertility. All studies present promising preliminary results, indicating increased endometrial thickness and resumed menstruation. Further characterization of individual cell products, their mode of action and larger clinical trials will be essential to establishing cell therapy as a viable option for the treatment of infertility and fertility …
Antioxidants in ICSI
2013
Male factor infertility can be caused by reasons, either related or not with total sperm production. Among causes of male infertility in cases of normal sperm count and motility, oxidative stress is one of the most relevant processes influencing fertility in vivo or in assisted reproduction treatments’ results. This chapter provides the most updated information regarding the oxidative stress situation in sperm and the relevance of antioxidants use in intracytoplasmic sperm injection results.
Male infertility and mitochondrial DNA
2004
The mitochondrial machinery plays a key role in the energy production and maintenance of spermatozoa motility. In this paper 200 idiopathic oligo-asthenozoospermic patients were classified on the basis of rapid progressive motility ("a") and sperm concentration. Mitochondrial enzymatic activity was studied and correlated to the viability of sperm cells. Mitochondrial DNA purified from both motile and non-motile sperm of the same individuals was amplificated using PCR. Results suggested that only motile sperm have organelles functional in oxygen consumption, unequivocally demonstrating that motility depends on the mitochondrial activity. Mitochondrial DNA of oligo-asthenozoospermic patients …
Human uterus transplantation in focus.
2016
Introduction Uterus transplantation (UTx) is introduced as the first treatment for absolute uterine factor infertility (AUFI), affecting 1:500 fertile aged women. This review presents potential patients, research and human UTx cases. Sources of data Published articles and our research experience. Areas of agreement The first UTx live births in 2014 established UTx as a possible treatment for AUFI. This was proceeded by 15 years of systematic research. Areas of controversy Is a deceased donor UTx as effective as the proven successful live donor UTx?. Growing points Human UTx trials will accumulate data on risks, effectiveness and long-term consequences for donors, recipients and children. Th…
Body mass index and impact on semen quality of men attending an infertility clinic
2019
Background: The reproductive consequences of lifestyle factors in men are still controversial. In this prospective study, we verified the impact of body mass index alterations on semen parameters of patients who attended an infertility clinic. Materials and Methods: Semen samples from 156 subjects aged 22 to 53 years were analyzed. Smokers were categorized as mild (≤ 10 cigarettes/day), moderate (10-20 cigarettes/day”) and heavy smokers (> 20 cigarettes/day”). Men were grouped based upon calculated body mass index values (underweight, <18.5 Kg/m2; normal, 18.5-24.9 Kg/m2; overweight, 25-29.9 Kg/m2; obese, ≥ 30 Kg/m2). The data collected included patient height and weight, semen volume…
Obesity and assisted reproductive technology outcomes.
2006
Obesity is a rising health problem in Western societies. It has been related to increased morbidity and mortality rates due to several pathologies. In the field of gynaecology and reproduction, obesity is associated with menstrual disorders, hirsutism, infertility, miscarriage and obstetric complications. It is known to impair human reproduction through different mechanisms such as insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism and elevated leptin levels. Weight management and dietary intervention can reverse this situation and improve reproductive function. Obesity can also impair the outcome of assisted reproductive technologies. The lower probability of a healthy live birth described in obese wome…
INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE AND INFGERTILITY: ANALYSIS OF LITERATURE AND FUTURE PERSPECTIVES
2021
Background: inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic disorders that affect the gastrointestinal tract but which also present extraintestinal manifestations. One of the problems related to IBD is the presence of bothfemale and male infertility. Aim: determine the correlation between IBD and male and female infertility by analyzing the literature. Material and method: studies carried out in the last twenty years have been selected through the PubMed search engine. Only studies were selected that in their conclusions showed a real correlation between IBD and infertility. Results: the first cause of infetility in both sexes is related to the surgical interventions that patients have to fac…
Occurrence of the interference of sperm-associated antibodies on sperm fertilizing ability as evaluated by the sperm-zona pellucida binding test and …
1997
PROBLEM: This study was performed to evaluate the occurrence as well as the level of the interference of sperm-associated antibodies on fertilization process. METHOD: Motile sperm suspensions from 28 infertile patients with high degree of autoimmunization against the sperm head were tested with the zona pellucida (ZP) binding test and with the sperm penetration assay (SPA) enhanced with TEST-yolk buffer. Both tests were also performed using donor sperm exposed and non-exposed to the patients' circulating sperm antibodies. RESULTS: A low ZP-binding was exhibited by sperm from 50% of patients with normal semen profile. All normozoospermic patients with low ZP-binding showed circulating sperm-…
